Chione

$10.00

I designed Chione (pronunciation: key-oh-knee) to be a wardrobe essential - a sweater that is tremendously cozy and practical. Broken rib worked in fingering weight yarn creates a warm fabric without being heavy or bulky. Raglan shaping and moderate ease give a classic fit, and instructions are included for cropped and standard lengths. Half-twisted rib edgings provide subtle contrast to the body of the sweater. The cuffs and hem are neatly finished with tubular bind offs & the folded collar provides an extra polished touch.

NEEDLES: SIZE A: US 2 (2.75 mm) for body & SIZE B: US 1 (2.25 mm) for edging. In both sizes: Circular needles of lengths appropriate for the yoke and body circumference and preferred small circumference needles.

GAUGE: 28 sts x 46 rnds = 4 in (10 cm) in broken rib, with size A needles, in the round & blocked.

TECHNIQUES USED: Long-tail cast on, German short rows, backwards loop cast on, half-twisted rib, long-tail tubular bind off, basic bind off & sewn folded collar

CONSTRUCTION: This textured raglan is worked seamlessly from the top down. The yoke is worked first, then the stitches are separated to work first the body then the sleeves. Stitches are picked up around the neckline to work the collar, adding structure to prevent the distortion of the neckline over time. The hem and cuffs are finished with the long-tail tubular bind off. The collar is folded over and sewn in place to create a neat round edge.

SIZING GUIDELINES: This sweater is designed to be worn with approximately 4 in (10 cm) of positive ease at the bust. I recommend choosing the size that most closely matches your upper chest measurement (circumference of chest at underarm level). However, if this size leaves you with 1 in (2.5 cm) of positive ease or less at your bust, you may want to size up if you prefer a very relaxed fit. If you typically choose your size based on your bust measurement and have been happy with fit, feel free to choose your size that way instead.

SAMPLE: Photos show the cropped version in size B on my body, which has an upper chest measurement of 31 in (77.5 cm), a bust measurement of 34 in (85 cm), and a height of 5’2” (157 cm). Based on my upper chest measurement, I would choose a size A, but I decided to size up, because with size A I would have had only 0 in (0 cm) of positive ease at the bust, and I prefer an extra relaxed fit for a raglan. I chose to shorten the sleeves of my sample by approximately 1.5 in (4 cm) because I have relatively short arms and narrow shoulders. Since this is longer than the 1 in (2.5 cm) worked straight at the end of the sleeve before the cuff, I recalculated my decrease rates for my desired sleeve length.
